CAPE TOWN - It is not clear whether a South African man jailed in Afghanistan for murder will return home.

It is understood authorities there are considering acquitting Phillip Young of murder.

He was arrested in 2009 in connection with a shooting in which an Afghan security guard was killed.

He insists he acted in self-defence.

In a letter Young recently wrote, which has been posted on his Facebook page, he says he is doubtful he will be acquitted.

He says his religion and cultural differences count against him in his appeal process.

He also claims corruption in the Afghan judicial system is making things difficult for him.

Yet it is alleged Afghan authorities may consider sending him back home, after the South African government intervened.

An online petition has been launched, calling for clemency in his case.
